The Day Ashwagandha Made Me Feel Wired Instead of Calm

It was supposed to be a normal relaxing Sunday.
I had taken Ashwagandha every evening for months without any issues — calm mind, steady energy, deep sleep. I trusted it completely. That morning I decided to try something different. I was feeling a little extra stressed after a hectic week, so I thought, “Why not take an extra dose in the morning? More calm can’t hurt, right?”

I mixed what I thought was 300 mg into my smoothie (turns out I had accidentally scooped closer to 600 mg because I was distracted). I drank it, went about my day, and waited for the usual gentle calm to settle in. Instead, something completely unexpected happened.

Within an hour I started feeling… off. Not calm. Not relaxed. The opposite.

My heart rate felt slightly elevated. My mind, instead of quieting down, started racing faster than usual. I felt restless, like I had drunk too much coffee but without the clear focus — just jittery, wired energy with an undercurrent of unease. I tried to read a book but couldn’t sit still. I paced around the house, folded laundry with unnecessary speed, then sat down only to stand up again five minutes later. My hands felt a little shaky. My thoughts jumped from one thing to another without landing. It was the strangest feeling — like my nervous system had been turned up instead of down.

By early afternoon the wired feeling intensified. I tried to take a nap (hoping it would pass), but I couldn’t relax enough to fall asleep. I felt simultaneously tired and wired — that horrible combination where your body wants to rest but your brain won’t let it. My stomach felt a bit unsettled too, not full nausea but that “something’s not right” sensation. I kept checking my pulse because it honestly felt like I was having a mild anxiety spike, which was ironic since I took Ashwagandha to reduce anxiety.

I finally realized what had happened when I went to put the jar away and saw how much powder was missing. I had accidentally doubled my usual morning dose. That extra amount had pushed me over the edge from “calm” into “overstimulated.”

I spent the rest of the day trying to ride it out. I drank extra water, went for a long walk (which helped a little), ate a proper meal, and avoided any more supplements. By evening the wired feeling started to ease, but I still felt off — restless, slightly anxious, and unusually alert when I should have been winding down. Sleep that night was fragmented. I woke up multiple times, mind still buzzing, and didn’t get the deep rest I was used to.

The next morning I woke up feeling like I had a mild hangover — not from alcohol, but from the over-calm-turned-wired paradox. My head was foggy, energy was low, and I felt emotionally flat. It took almost two full days for everything to return to normal.

That single day taught me more about Ashwagandha than months of smooth sailing ever did. Here’s what I learned from accidentally taking too much:

1. There is such a thing as “too much calm”

Ashwagandha is famous for lowering cortisol and promoting relaxation, but at higher doses (for me, above 500–600 mg at once), it can overshoot and create a paradoxical stimulation. My nervous system got confused — too much GABA-like activity led to a rebound alertness and restlessness. It felt like the calm switch got flipped so hard that my body over-corrected.

2. Dose matters more than I realized

I had been creeping up slowly and thought 400–500 mg was still safe. That one accidental double dose showed me my personal upper limit is lower than I thought. What works perfectly at 300–400 mg split across the day can feel completely different at 600+ mg in one go. Everyone’s sensitivity is different, and mine is apparently on the lower side for single doses.

3. Timing and splitting the dose is crucial

Taking a large amount all at once (even if it was “morning dose”) amplified the effect in a bad way. Since that day, I strictly split my dose: 150 mg with breakfast and 200–250 mg in the evening. Smaller amounts spread out give me the calm I want without any risk of feeling wired or flat.

4. My body gives clear signals — I just have to listen

The wired feeling, the restlessness, the inability to settle — those were loud signals that I had overdone it. Instead of pushing through, I should have stopped immediately and taken a break. Now when I feel anything “off” (too heavy, too wired, too flat), I pause or lower the dose right away. My body is usually right.

5. A short break can reset everything

After that wired day, I took a full 10-day break from Ashwagandha. The first 3–4 days I felt a mild return of background tension, but by day 6–7 I felt surprisingly clear and light. When I restarted at my new lower split dose, the benefits came back stronger and cleaner than before. No wired feeling, no heaviness — just the smooth calm I originally loved.

That experience completely changed how I use Ashwagandha now:

  • I never take more than 250 mg at once
  • I always split morning and evening
  • I stay at 350–400 mg total per day maximum
  • I cycle every 8–10 weeks with 1–2 weeks off
  • I always take it with food or milk — never on an empty stomach

The wired day was uncomfortable, but I’m actually grateful it happened. It taught me respect for the herb and showed me my personal limits. Ashwagandha is incredibly helpful when used correctly, but like anything powerful, it can push you in the wrong direction if you’re not careful.

Now when I make my evening milk or morning smoothie, I measure carefully and remember that day. The calm I get is deeper and cleaner because I respect the dose. I no longer chase “more is better.” I chase “just right.”

And honestly? Feeling steady, calm, and clear every day — without any wired or heavy side effects — is worth way more than any extra dose could ever give me.

That one mistaken day turned out to be one of the most valuable lessons Ashwagandha ever taught me.
