For years my mind felt like it was always running.
Even when I was physically tired, my thoughts wouldn’t slow down. I’d lie in bed replaying conversations, worrying about tomorrow, or making endless mental lists. During the day, small things would trigger a rush of anxiety — heart beating faster, shoulders tense, mind jumping from one worry to the next. I tried meditation, breathing exercises, and cutting caffeine, but nothing gave me consistent, noticeable calm when I needed it most.
That’s when I decided to test two popular adaptogens head-to-head: Holy Basil (Tulsi) and Ashwagandha. Both are praised for reducing stress and calming the mind, but I wanted to know which one actually worked faster and felt better for my type of racing, anxious thoughts. I took them separately for 6–8 weeks each, with a two-week break in between, and kept detailed notes about how my mind felt hour by hour. Here’s what happened — and why one clearly won for me.
First, I tried Holy Basil
I started with Holy Basil because many people said it was faster-acting for anxiety and mental clarity. I took 300–400 mg of a standardized extract in the morning and sometimes again in the afternoon when stress peaked. The first few days felt promising. Within 30–45 minutes I noticed a gentle lifting of tension. My mind felt a bit quieter, and I could sit and work without as many racing thoughts interrupting me. It had a light, almost uplifting quality — like a soft mental fog had lifted.
But after about two weeks, the effects became less reliable. It helped with mild stress, but when bigger stressors hit — a difficult meeting, family tension, or tight deadline — the calm wasn’t deep enough to hold. My mind would still spiral, just maybe a little slower than before. Some days I felt clear-headed, other days I felt “calm but scattered,” like the anxiety was muted but still buzzing underneath. Sleep improved slightly, but not dramatically. By the end of the trial, I liked Holy Basil, but it didn’t feel like the deep, reliable calm I was hoping for.
Then I switched to Ashwagandha
After a two-week break, I started Ashwagandha at 250 mg in the evening. I added a small morning dose (100–150 mg) after the first week. The difference was slower to appear than Holy Basil, but much deeper once it kicked in.
Week 2–3: I started noticing my mind was quieter overall. The constant background chatter and “what if” thoughts decreased significantly. When stress hit, I could feel it coming, breathe through it, and let it pass instead of getting swept away. The calm felt more solid — like my nervous system had a stronger foundation rather than a temporary cover.
By week 4–6, the contrast was clear. Busy days didn’t leave me mentally fried. I could handle interruptions without losing my train of thought. Evenings felt peaceful instead of wired. Sleep became consistently deeper, and I woke up feeling more rested. The anxiety that used to build throughout the day stayed much lower. My mind felt calmer, clearer, and more resilient.
Head-to-head: How they compared for my racing mind
After trying both properly, here’s how they stacked up for me:
- Speed of calm: Holy Basil won slightly — I felt lighter within 30–60 minutes. Ashwagandha took 1–3 weeks to really build up.
- Depth of calm: Ashwagandha won by a mile. It handled bigger stressors and gave a deeper, more stable peace. Holy Basil felt lighter and more surface-level.
- Duration: Ashwagandha lasted all day (especially with split dosing). Holy Basil faded after 4–6 hours.
- Effect on racing thoughts: Ashwagandha quieted the constant mental chatter more effectively. Holy Basil helped but didn’t go as deep.
- Sleep: Ashwagandha improved sleep dramatically. Holy Basil helped mildly but not consistently.
- Side effects: Both were gentle, but Holy Basil occasionally made me feel a bit “flat.” Ashwagandha felt more balanced once I found my dose.
After finishing both trials, I stopped Holy Basil and stayed with Ashwagandha. It simply gave me the kind of calm my racing mind needed — deeper, longer-lasting, and more reliable under real-life pressure.
My current routine for a calm mind
I keep it simple and effective:
- Morning: 150 mg with breakfast (smoothie or yogurt) — daytime calm and focus support
- Evening: 250 mg in warm milk with honey and cinnamon — deep relaxation and overnight reset
- Total daily: 400 mg
- Cycle: 8–10 weeks on, 1–2 weeks off
- Always with food or fat — never empty stomach
This split-dosing approach gives me calm coverage throughout the day without any heaviness. On particularly stressful days, I might add an extra 100 mg midday with a snack, but most days the morning + evening split is perfect.
What I’d tell anyone with a racing, anxious mind
If your thoughts won’t slow down, small things trigger big anxiety, or you feel mentally exhausted by the end of the day, I really get it. Both Holy Basil and Ashwagandha can help, but they serve different needs. Holy Basil is great for quick, light calm during mild stress. Ashwagandha is better for deeper, longer-lasting resilience when anxiety is more constant or stress is chronic.
For me, Ashwagandha was the clear winner. It didn’t just take the edge off — it helped rebuild a calmer baseline so my mind didn’t race as easily in the first place.
If you’re deciding between the two, my advice is simple: try them one at a time for at least 6–8 weeks each. Pay attention not just to the first few days, but to how you feel during real stressful moments. For my racing mind, Ashwagandha gave me the depth and staying power I needed.
Now when my thoughts start speeding up, I don’t panic. I know I have a tool that works with my body instead of just covering symptoms. The calm feels real, sustainable, and earned.
And after years of feeling like my mind was always one step ahead of me, having it finally feel peaceful is one of the best changes I’ve made.
If you’re struggling with a racing mind, give Ashwagandha a fair try. Start low, be consistent, and give it time. For me, it was the one that finally helped my mind slow down and stay calmer — not just for a few hours, but day after day.
