Why I Got Mild Headaches at First and What I Did About It

When I first started taking Ashwagandha, I was excited but also a little nervous.
I had read so many good things about it helping with stress, sleep, and overall calm, so I jumped in with hope. The first week felt promising — I slept a bit better and felt slightly less tense during the day. But around day 5 or 6, something annoying started happening: mild headaches. Not full-blown migraines, but that dull, pressure-like ache behind my eyes and across my forehead that would come and go throughout the day. It wasn’t severe enough to stop me, but it was uncomfortable enough that I started wondering if Ashwagandha was the cause.

I almost quit right then. I thought maybe my body didn’t agree with it. But I really wanted the benefits, so instead of stopping, I decided to figure out why it was happening and how to fix it. After some trial and error over the next couple of weeks, the headaches completely disappeared, and I’ve been taking Ashwagandha comfortably ever since. Here’s exactly what happened, why I think the headaches appeared, and the simple changes that solved it for me.

What the headaches felt like

They weren’t terrible, but they were persistent. It was a low-grade, tension-type headache — a tight band across my forehead and a bit of pressure behind my eyes. It usually started in the late morning or early afternoon and would linger until evening. Some days it was barely noticeable; other days it made it hard to focus. I also felt a little more dehydrated than usual, and my neck and shoulders felt tighter than normal. Interestingly, the headaches were strongest on the days I took my full dose in the morning on a relatively empty stomach.

At first I blamed other things — maybe I wasn’t drinking enough water, maybe it was screen time, maybe it was the change in weather. But when I skipped Ashwagandha for two days in a row, the headaches vanished. That confirmed it was connected to the herb.

Why I think the headaches happened

After paying close attention and doing some reading, I realized a few likely reasons:

  • Starting dose was too high for my body at first: I began with 300–400 mg, which was too much too soon. My system wasn’t used to it, and the sudden calming effect may have caused a mild adjustment reaction (like a temporary change in blood flow or muscle tension).
  • Taking it on a relatively empty stomach: Even with a light breakfast, the powder hit my system faster and stronger, which seemed to trigger the headaches.
  • Dehydration: Ashwagandha can have a mild diuretic effect for some people, and I wasn’t drinking enough water to compensate.
  • Muscle tension release: As my body started to relax from chronic stress, some old neck and shoulder tightness may have surfaced as headaches while adjusting.

Once I understood these possible causes, I felt better about continuing instead of quitting. I just needed to adjust my approach.

What I changed to make the headaches go away

I made four small but important changes, and within a week the headaches were completely gone. Here’s what worked:

1. Lowered the dose temporarily
I dropped back to 150 mg in the evening only for two weeks. This gave my body time to adjust gently without overwhelming it. Once I felt stable, I slowly increased again — adding 50 mg every 5–7 days until I reached my comfortable range.

2. Always took it with food or fat
I stopped taking it on an empty or light stomach. I made sure to have it with a proper meal or in warm milk with nut butter or honey. The fat and protein seemed to buffer it and prevent the quick spike that was triggering the headaches.

3. Split the dose
Instead of one bigger dose, I started splitting it: 100–150 mg in the morning with breakfast and 150–200 mg in the evening. Smaller amounts at a time were much gentler on my system. No more single big “hit” that seemed to cause the pressure.

4. Increased water intake and added electrolytes
I started drinking an extra 500 ml of water with each dose and added a pinch of sea salt or a squeeze of lemon. Staying better hydrated made a surprising difference — the headaches almost disappeared within a few days of this change.

My current headache-free routine

Now I take Ashwagandha comfortably every day with this simple approach:

  • Morning: 150 mg with a full breakfast (smoothie with banana, berries, and nut butter)
  • Evening: 200–250 mg in warm milk with honey and cinnamon
  • Total daily: 350–400 mg
  • Always with food or fat
  • Drink at least one full glass of water with each dose
  • Cycle: 8–10 weeks on, 1–2 weeks off

Since making these changes, I haven’t had a single headache related to Ashwagandha. The benefits I wanted — calmer mind, better sleep, steady energy — are all there without any discomfort.

What I’d tell anyone who gets headaches when starting

If you start Ashwagandha and get mild headaches, don’t panic and quit. It’s actually pretty common in the beginning and usually easy to fix. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Lower your dose immediately — go back to 100–150 mg and stay there for a week or two.
  • Always take it with a meal or fat (milk, nut butter, avocado, etc.).
  • Split the dose if you’re taking more than 200 mg total.
  • Drink more water — add a pinch of salt or lemon if needed.
  • Be patient — give each new dose level at least 5–7 days before changing again.
  • If headaches persist after these changes, pause for a few days and consult a doctor.

For me, those early headaches were actually a helpful signal. They taught me to respect the herb, start slower, and support my body properly. Once I adjusted, the benefits came through cleanly without any drawbacks.

Now taking Ashwagandha feels completely smooth and positive. No more worrying about side effects. Just the calm, better sleep, and steady energy I was looking for from the beginning.

If you’re in that early phase where you’re getting mild headaches, know that it usually passes quickly with a few simple tweaks. Don’t give up too soon — the good stuff is worth the short adjustment period. Your body just needs a little time and care to adapt.

That patient, respectful start is what allowed me to keep using Ashwagandha comfortably for years now — and I’m so glad I didn’t quit when those first headaches appeared.
